Summer Jobs: Teens At Risk For Workplace Injuries?

Many teens gear up for summer by finding the perfect summer job or - at least - a job to fill their time and make some money. Teens make up a significant portion of seasonal employees in the summer in outdoor work, camps, restaurants and agriculture among many other industries. Many of the jobs and occupations that teens fill can lead to injury and missed work.

A couple of the main reasons causing teens to suffer work-related injuries include inadequate training and supervision. This may be as simple as failure to instruct on how to properly lift a heavy object or how to clean up a spill. If you are sending your teen into the workforce, make sure they are being properly trained and supervised. Here are some common issues to look out for according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

Retail/Grocery/Convenience Stores

  • Equipment and machinery
  • Heavy lifting
  • Slippery floors

Food Service

  • Sharp objects
  • Hot cooking equipment
  • Slippery floors
  • Heavy lifting

Office/Clerical

  • Repetitive hand motion
  • Back and neck strain
  • Stress

Outdoor work

  • Sun exposure
  • Heat
  • Pesticides and chemicals
  • Machinery and vehicles
  • Noise
  • Heavy lifting

Construction

  • Machinery and vehicles
  • Heavy lifting
  • Falls
  • Hazardous materials
  • Electricity
  • Noise

Agriculture

  • Machinery and vehicles
  • Falls
  • Electricity
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Heat

Many different hazards may be present in different types of labor and employment. Training and supervision are critical to teenagers who are unfamiliar with laws and the normal routine in a workplace setting. Before they begin any job, make sure your teen is taking proper precautions to ensure that their work environment is a safe one.
