What social security benefits do disabled children have?

Children under the age of 18 are entitled to some social security benefits. These are available through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) initiative.

This blog will serve as a brief overview into how a children's disability is defined as eligible for SSI, and what type of SSI they are likely to receive.

Who is considered as disabled under the law?

For SSI eligibility, disability is defined as the following:

  • A person who is either not working, or is earning less than a certain amount each year.
  • A person who has a condition that creates a significant limitation to their physical or mental function, and thus is unable to work to a full or normal capacity.
  • In the situation of a person under the age of 18, a child has suffered with his or her disability for 12 consecutive months, or he or she has a condition with a terminal diagnosis.

Applying for SSI disabled child benefits

A parent or a guardian of the disabled child can make an application on the child's behalf. The applicant should call 1-800-772-1213 in order to start the application process. During this process, you must be able to provide detailed information about the child's illness or disability.

Depending on the severity of the situation, SSI may decide to start making immediate payments to you while your application is being processed. If they later come to the conclusion that the child does not qualify, you will not need to repay those payments.

You may want to seek legal guidance if you are struggling with an SSI disability claim or if you have any questions.
