Next steps after a denied Social Security Disability claim

As an employee or a former employee, you have paid toward disability insurance through your taxes all of your working life. It is one of the key protections offered to you by the Social Security Administration. These benefits help ensure that if you are to fall ill, become disabled as a result and need to stop working, you can have some income to support yourself as a disabled person.

Although Social Security Disability benefits should be on offer for all people in need, it may come as a surprise to learn that around 70 percent of applicants get denied Social Security Disability benefits the first time that they apply. So what should a person do when they have their claim denied by the SSA?

Making an appeal

The first thing that a person should consider when they have had their claim denied by the SSA is making an appeal. However, if you make no changes to the application and only reapply, you will likely not be successful. Making a formal appeal takes a longer amount of time than simply resubmitting an application, but you are much more likely to be successful when you take this course of action.

You should consider the reason why your application was denied and think about whether any additional information about your situation would make the application stronger. If you would like to appeal your claim, it is important to take your time. Many people connect with the benefits they need through appealing the denial. Success usually comes after they conduct considered research into what makes a successful Social Security Disability claim.
