Conveyor accident claims worker's life, injures another

Just a couple of days after Christmas, a 52-year-old Louisville Metro Public Works (LMPW) employee lost his life in a workplace accident. Another Public Works employee was injured in the incident; however, he is expected to recover.

The accident happened at the Louisville Metro Public Works Road Maintenance Division West District on Dec. 27, at about 11:25 a.m. The man was working with two others. They were loading salt onto a conveyor, which would carry it to a dome. He got caught in the machinery.

According to the coroner, the deceased worker died from blunt force injuries. The coroner ruled the death an accident.

All of the men working there were experienced, according to a spokesman for the LMPW. The Louisville Metro Police Department's Public Integrity Unit is investigating the worker's death, as will the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The Louisville mayor said that an internal review will also be completed.

Workplace injuries occur far too often. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5,190 workers lost their lives in workplace accidents in 2016. That's a significant increase (7 percent) from 2015, when 4,836 workers died in workplace accidents.

When a worker dies on the job, his or her family is entitled to receive a death benefit from workers' compensation. While this will not bring the loved one back to his or her family, it can provide financial help during a difficult time. If you have lost a loved one in a workplace accident, you have a right to compensation as well. An attorney can make you aware of your legal options.
