Dealing with a denied disability claim

In you are a person that has become recently ill or disabled, it likely means that you have spent some part of your life working and paying taxes. When you pay your taxes, some of these funds go towards the Social Security Administration (SSA), and the SSA in turn provides disability benefits to eligible tax payers.

If you have paid SSA taxes for at least 5 of the last 10 years, and you unfortunately becomes unable to work because of your disability or illness, you have the right to file for Social Security Disability. The sad reality is that more than 70 percent of these claims are denied each year.

What to do if your Social Security Disability claim has been denied

The Social Security Disability application process is a very complex one. Therefore, many people make at least one small mistake when they apply for the first time. This can often be fixed upon review, and an appeal can be made.

Should I appeal my original application or reapply?

Although appealing your original decision often takes a longer time, this is generally a better idea than reapplying altogether. This is because more than 50 percent of appealed application denials are successful. If you decide to start again, you are back to square one, with just a 30 percent chance of being successful.

If you are a disabled person that is unable to work, it is important that you consider all of the support options that are available to you. In addition, it is a good idea to get a second opinion on any SSA application that you make.
